3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Every spiritual blessing – every spiritual enrichment needed for the spiritual life. Since these have been given or bestowed on believers, we don’t need to ask for them but rather appropriate them by faith
In verses 4 – 14 we see that our spiritual blessings are bases on the work of the three Persons of the Trinity.
The work of the Father 4-6 (Eternity Passed)
The work of the Son 7-12 (At a point in time)
The work of the Spirit 13-14 (At the moment of Trusting in Christ)
The work of the Father 1:4-6
He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless. 1:4
- He Chose us
- In Christ
- To be Holy and Blameless
• He predestined us to be adopted as His sons through Jesus Christ 1:5
• In accordance with his good pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace which he has freely given us in the one he loves. 1:6
The bases of and that which dominates the corresponding action
Not out of his good pleasure and will – but – his entire good pleasure and will are the dominating, controlling and prevailing influences in his choosing us.
The work of the Son 7-12 (At a point in time)
• Redemption through his blood – 1:7
• Forgiveness of sins
• In accordance with the riches of God’s grace
• Which he lavished on us
o Lavished – given in abundance or to excess
• With all wisdom and understanding. 1:8
o Wisdom – Objective insight into the true nature of God’s revelation – ability to see the truth
o Understanding – Subjective/personal apprehension of God’s revelation. Understanding the significance it has for me personally
• Made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure which he purposed in Christ 1:9
o Mystery – something hither to unknown – that part of his will which was unknown up till this time
• To be put into effect when the times have reached their fulfilment to bring all things in heaven and on the earth under one head even Christ. 1:10
o This is; that in a certain time God is going to bring all things together under the headship of Christ
This is not just about us, ultimately it about His purpose in Christ – to bring all things together under the headship of Christ
We are privileged to be part of it, knowing it and understanding it.
By making us part of His purpose in Christ, not only is it a spiritual and heavenly purpose but it is a basis for spiritually blessings
• Jewish believers are also part of the Mystery and God’s purpose in Christ v11-12
o In him we were also chosen – In Christ we also have our inheritance
o Having been predestined – marked out beforehand
o First to hope in Christ is a simple a chronological event
Christ redemption and the revelation of his will that all things will be headed up by Christ at the end of the ages, includes all believers both Jewish and Gentile.
The work of the Spirit 13-14 (At the moment we Trust in Christ)
• Sealed by the Holy Spirit. 1:13,14.
o Literally – They were sealed in Him (Christ) with the promised Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:4-5)
• Deposit, guaranteeing our inheritance
The deposit (The Holy Spirit) is a down payment with a guarantee of more to come.
In essence the deposit of the Holy Spirit is like a little bit of heaven in believer’s lives with a guarantee of much more to come.
Non-negotiable contract – but this is not a contract between us and God – this is God by himself saying he is going to do these things.
It completed – What God has done for us and why he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.
We have every spiritual enrichment needed to live the spiritual life
Not to live A spiritual live
But to live THE spiritual live we have in Christ Jesus.
